Afrofusion Artist Darkua Joins Apple Music’s Up Next in Ghana

Apple Music has announced that Darkua, an alternative singer-songwriter from Ghana, is the next artist to be featured in its Up Next artist development program. Darkua, whose real name is Naa Darkua Chinonye Wristberg, expressed her excitement about being selected for the program, stating that it feels like a dream come true. She sees this opportunity as a significant step in her career as an Afrofusion artist.

Darkua’s musical journey began at a young age when her parents exposed her to the music of renowned Ghanaian artists such as A.B Crenstil, E.T Mensah, and Lagbaja, among others. These influences played a crucial role in shaping her musical growth. Her Ghanaian and Nigerian roots have allowed her to explore distinct sounds, resulting in a fusion of styles in her music.

Her debut single, “Amalelor” released in 2021 and produced by Ghanaian producer Viqtorioz, quickly became a fan favorite and received significant airplay on FM stations in Ghana. After dedicating a year to honing her craft, Darkua released her fourth single, “Echo,” in 2023. Produced again by Viqtorioz, the song is an empowering Afro-soul track that showcases her confidence and comfort in expressing her desires to her partner.

Apple Music’s Up Next program has a successful track record of highlighting emerging talent since its establishment in 2017. Darkua follows in the footsteps of Nigerian superstars Burna Boy and Tems, who were previously featured in the program. The expansion of the program to include South African and Nigerian talents has demonstrated Apple Music’s commitment to showcasing African artists as global sensations.

Darkua will be featured in Apple Music’s Ghana Up Next playlist as the latest Up Next act from Ghana. The playlist, curated by Apple Music editors from around the world, showcases a diverse group of new and emerging artists. The Up Next program has previously featured internationally recognized artists such as Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Burna Boy, and Tems, among others.

Darkua’s inclusion in the Up Next program is a testament to her talent and potential, and it presents an excellent opportunity for her to reach a wider audience and further establish herself as a rising star in the music industry.
