Grammy Awards Introduce New Category: Best African Music Performance
The Recording Academy, the organizers of the Grammy Awards, recently introduced a new category called “Best African Music Performance.” This category was announced along with two other additions, namely “Best Pop Dance Recording” and “Best Alternative Jazz Album.” Starting from the next year’s show, these new categories will be eligible for nominations.

In a statement released on the Recording Academy’s website, it was emphasized that the creation of the “Best African Music Performance” category acknowledges the global success and influence of African acts such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Black Sherif, and Terns. These artists, along with the popularity of the Afrobeats genre, have achieved remarkable chart-topping success and have become prominent figures in the streaming industry.
The Grammy’s “Best African Music Performance” category aims to encompass a broad range of musical styles from the African continent, including but not limited to Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, and Fuji. Both contemporary and traditional African music will be considered for this category, reflecting the diverse and vibrant musical heritage of the continent.
