The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has declared the 70-year old man who had faced tough competition from rivals Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar as winner of the 2023 Nigeria Presidential elections.
Mr. Tinubu’s win came as a shock to many Nigerians especially the younger ones who prefer Peter Obi win of some major states.
Peter Obi’s supporters properly called ‘Obidients’ gained prominence on social media making many Nigerians believe in a guaranteed win for Mr. Obi but that took a dramatic turn after certain figures from other states placed Tinubu in a comfortable lead.
Peter Obi and his supporters slammed the electoral system of being flawed and disputed the election results, claiming that the results had been manipulated to Tinubu’s advantage.
“We are defiant. The elections were rigged. – Ndi Kato, Labour Party’s presidential campaign spokesperson grumbled to CNN on Wednesday.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Mahmood Yakubu, the ruling party candidate Mr. Tinubu of the ‘All Progressives Congress party’ had close to 8.8 million votes representing about 37% of the total votes, main rival, Atiku Abubakar, polled 29%, and Labour’s Peter Obi, 25%.
Tinubu beat vice president Atiku Abubakar of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and a third leading candidate Peter Obi, a favourite candidate for young Nigerians.
Mr. Tinubu’s acceptance speech called for reconciliation with his rivals to work together and build the country.
It is the only nation we have. It is one country, and we must build it together, he said.
Opposition party has however vowed legally challenge the election results
